Tower of Babel - Patrick Mimran
For Patrick Mimran’s solo exhibition at Parc de Bagatelle, Paris, the international artist required creative and technical expertise to deliver his concept for a 3.5m tall interpretation of the Tower of Babel. Taking reference from the biblical story and Bruegel’s renowned paintings, the piece was developed into an audio visual centrepiece that received international acclaim and featured in Le Figaro and the Journal of Music Theory. The piece was recently refurbished to take centre stage at the 2009 Excite show, London.
Patrick’s contemporary sculpted tower houses 45 12" video screens, an assortment of language dictionaries displayed behind 1400 hand cut windows with 9 speakers hidden around the top. The installation is bought to life using high level computer automation, feeding the video screens with animated mouths and the speakers with a cacophony of voices - all made to run on a single 13 amp plug with a simple on off switch.
In addition to Paris, the piece has been installed in exhibitions in New York, Graz and London.
