Gallery Models
In May 2009 Newcastle launched its £26m flagship visitor attraction, the Great North Museum. Throughout the galleries are various displays of flora and fauna, including models of both living and extinct species.
The brief was to create two life-size models for the Diversity of Life’s Bio Wall and an extinct fish for the Pre-History Gallery. The two models for the Bio Wall comprised a suspended harbour porpoise and a narwhal head poised as though breaking the sea's surface. The Pre-History fish was an extinct 3.5m freshwater rhizodus.
Research and close liaisons with the museum highlighted key features and colourings for each of the models. Maquettes and colour swatches were developed early to ensure the replicas were as accurate as possible.
"Thanks to you and your team for all your help with the Natural Science Gallery – the Narwhal is a big hit with the visitors."
- Dan Gordon, Keeper of Biology - Great North Museum.
