Jet Set Giraffe - Patrick Mimran

Patrick Mimran was invited to create a centrepiece for Monaco’s bi-annual exhibition “Le Parade des Animaux”. The piece was to be located on the centre fountain in Monaco’s Grand Casino Garden and Patrick's concept was to create a 7m tall installation of a giraffe. The piece was designed and fabricated to be a silver statue by day and to come alive at night.

Once the sun had set, the giraffe’s spots illuminated in an animated display. Diachroic glass was set within the fibreglass shell to create coloured effects and the lights were turned on and off via pre-programmed sequences. A cooling system was engineered to counteract the extreme temperatures of the June sun and the sculpture configured for easy access and maintenance.

In addition to creating the sculpture, the logistics and authority applications had to be managed. The giraffe proved to be a memorable meeting spot for visitors from around the world.
